Virtual Field Trip On Oct. 31, Gilles-Sweet Elementary School fifth-graders watched the release of
bats from the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico via a virtual-field trip
online. Students were able to participate in a live
chat with the experts from the Carlsbad Caverns.
Carlsbad
Cavern is a sanctuary for about 1 million Mexican Freetail bats. During
the day they crowd together on the ceiling of Bat Cave, a passageway
near the natural entrance of Carlsbad Cavern. Only scientific
researchers see them In their darkened home. At nightfall, the bats
leave the cave in gigantic swarms.
Video Conference At Gilles-Sweet Elementary School, Mary Salco's third grade class participated in the first ever video conference in the district. The topic of the interactive distance learning enrichment program was camouflage, which third grade students are studying in their Science classes. Lisa Pride presented from the Education Service Center at Greenbush located in Girard, Kansas.

Old Swimming Pool Unites Hundreds
On Saturday, October 27, the Fairview High School Parents Swimming
Association hosted one of the largest reunions in Fairview Park
School's history.
Since
the demolition of the Fairview High School Pool this year, the
association decided to do something special to unite the individuals
who participated at the pool at one point in time. Former and current
coaches, swimmers, divers, announcers were among the attendees. Activities
included dinner, a documentary of past memories at the facility, an
appearance by the Fairview Park City Mayor Eileen Patton and guest
of honor coach Dick Segrist.
"We often visit the places where
we had so many fond memories," said former president of the Fairview
Parents Swimming Association Bob Surgenor. "...All we have now are
pictures and videos of those who graced the deck and the depths of the
Grand Old Pool."
The
pool was built during the 1960-61 school year. The first competitive
swim team was organized by coach Dick Segrist during the 1961-62 school
year. With Segrists leadership, Fairview Park won the Ohio State Championship
during the 1963-64 school year.
In
2005, Fairview Park Schools and community implemented the Gemini
Project. The ongoing community driven project offers solutions for the educational
and recreational needs for citizens of Fairview Park. Although the
Fairview High School pool is gone, the project includes a new
recreational center equipped with a new pool and gymnasium for
students and community members to enjoy.
