ACT Scholarships
Area students can score higher ACT marks with the help of new scholarships this spring.
The scholarships will allow two more students to learn fresh skills and strategies at a test preparation course next month and raise their scores on ACT exams. The ACT Test Preparation Course will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Polaris Career Center, 7285 Old Oak Boulevard, Middleburg Heights. The five-week course will be on Tuesdays, starting April 29.
A partial scholarship will be awarded, based on financial need, to two high-school students enrolling in the course. Completed applications are due Mon., April 21.
"I want to reach and help as many students as possible because scoring well on the ACT is so important," said Laura Icardi, who teaches the course in three counties. "Increasing learning skills and strategies will help students boost their scores for success." In the course, Icardi will review skills in main subjects and help students overcome test-taking anxieties. The course also promises practice tests, as well as personal study plans. In earlier sessions at Polaris, students averaged three-point increases on practice exams.
The increased competition among young adults to gain college acceptance and scholarship dollars demands higher test scores. The average tuition at four-year public colleges rose 6.6 percent last year, reported the Associated Press. The $381 hike increased tuition to $6,185. Charges for public universities that include room and board rose 5.9 percent to $13,589.
To request a scholarship application or receive more information about the course, call Laura Icardi at 330.722.7235, or email licardi@att.net. Completed applications should be mailed to Icardi at 7464 Egypt Road, Medina, Ohio 44256, before April 21.
The next ACT Test Preparation Course will be offered in September at Polaris.

Thank You Fairview Park
On March 4, the City of
Fairview Park voters approved Issue 4, a seven mils renewal of an
existing tax levy for the Fairview Park City Schools [FPCS]. Issue 4 is
not a tax increase for residents.
"The passage of this renewal brings a stability to this district that
Fairview Park has not seen in decades," said FPCS Board President
Dennis Rehor. "By addressing our facility needs with Gemini and our
operational needs with the passage of this renewal, the Fairview Park
Schools, and the community of Fairview Park as a whole, is in a
position to flourish for many years to come. On behalf of the Board of
Education, I extend thanks to the community of Fairview Park for
showing such strong support of this renewal."
FPCS would like to thank the Fairview Park community for choosing to
pass Issue 4. Approval of the renewal will help the FPCS Board to stand
by their 2006 pledge to not seek new money for a five-year period
through 2011.
"The Board of Education and I are very thankful to the community for
the trust they have placed in us with the passage of this renewal,"
said Superintendent Brion Deitsch. "Our Treasurer Ryan Ghizzoni and I
will come to work every day looking for ways to make our district better
for our kids in an efficient and cost effective manner. We are Fairview
Park."
In the Know
In 2005 the Gemini Project, a joint city-school district venture, was
voted on by the community to consolidate school buildings and improve
facilities for the Fairview Park students and community. As a result,
the district opened the new Gilles-Sweet Elementary School building,
made renovations and technology upgrades to the high school and middle
school campuses, and improved athletic facilities. In addition, the
city was able to open the new Gemini Recreation Center in January 2008. |
