K., Jesse G., Tyler Y. and Nathan W. Juniors: Donny
H., Spencer S., Chase Z. and Senior: Sean J.
These students volunteered their
time to help the Fairview Park Library and students by participating in the
Guys and Books Program. The program was a series of book discussions for Gilles-Sweet fourth through sixth grade boys led by FHS guys. Each 30-minute session consisted of
reading together followed by book-related activities. The goal is to
create a self sustaining program in which boys of all ages engage in
reading for pleasure. Through the guidance and support portrayed by the
high school guys, it is evident that the Gilles-Sweet fourth through sixth grade boys
have become more engaged in reading. |

Michelle Kocar was announced as the district's new Curriculum Coordinator. Kocar's contract with the district begins August 1. She comes to FPCS from Avon Local Schools.
"I've worked with children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Each grade level brings with it a unique set of celebrations and challenges," said Kocar. "I am prepared to work with the Fairview Park City Schools staff and parents to achieve a shared vision for ensuring each student receives a high quality education based on students' individual needs."
While in Avon, Kocar served as Principal of Heritage South Elementary. The school received an excellent rating on the local report card during her three years there. Other career accomplishments include Regional Value-Added Specialist, D3A2 Founding Advisory Board Member, Standards-Aligned Instructional Leadership Graduate and a published author in Principal Navigator Magazine.
Kocar has over ten years experience in education, and is currently working on her Educational Doctorate Degree Program in Educational Leadership from Northcentral University.
"I am very excited about the potential Michelle Kocar will bring to Fairview Park City Schools," said Superintendent Brion Deitsch. "Fairview Park is a district that many people are beginning to sit up and take notice of, and her experience and dedication will only add to the momentum we are developing in the Fairview Park City Schools. Our desire is to be a district of excellence, and the addition of Mrs. Kocar is another positive step in that direction."

New Hope Reformed Church/Bus Parking By code, any pad/hard surface installed over 5000 square feet, must have an underground water retention system installed. The installation of the system will increase the budget. Currently, the district is looking into renovating the parking lot around the Parkview building for this year's budget cycle. Due to the required water system and the rise in the budget, the district plans to delay making a bus pad until next school year. Superintendent Brion Deitsch said he is committed to moving the buses away from Parkview to allow the Early Education Center more space for a playground. He is currently surveying the community for an alternative location until the permanent pad is installed.
Staffing An administrator should be in place for the Early Education Learning Center the end of May.
Property Disposal Currently, the district is working with Pepple/Waggoner to determine the value of the former Garnett and Coffinberry properties, and the impact that the current economy will have on the sale of these properties. Once the information is collected, the district will prepare for the public sale sometime late this spring or early summer.

PTA Sponsored Mosaic Project Every student from Gilles-Sweet will work with Augusto Bordelois, a visual artist with Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio, to create a dramatic mosaic mural that will adorn a 40 foot corridor in the school. The students will be working in their art classes with Bordelois from May 27 through June 4. The theme for the mural is the four seasons. All students will participate in the creation of the mosaic.
Recycling Update Gilles-Sweet has continued to participate in the Abitibi Paper Retriever Program recycling paper at Gilles-Sweet, which is deposited in three recycling bins in the parking lot. Funds raised from the schools' efforts have been used for enrichment programs, such as Destination Imagination, On-Words and the math problem solving contest. The total amount of money raised is still to be determined, but $116.38 was raised for the month of April alone, which saved 24.18 cubic yards of landfill space.
Fairview Park Business Advisory Student Volunteer Recognition Jacob Brousek was nominated by his fifth-grade teacher Connie Haseley for his involvement with the Cleveland Animal Protective League. After reading a book for his class book report about his dog, who is also a rescue dog, he decided to do a fundraiser for the APL. He was able to do this through his involvement with Q104 as a "cash kid". He sold raffle tickets to Gilles-Sweet staff for a restaurant gift certificate and collected cash donations totaling over $300. In addition to his involvement with the APL, Jacob is a student ambassador and has also been involved with fundraising for the Diabetes Association.
