OUR SCHOOLS State mandates from Columbus have frozen revenue for our schools since 1976 while higher operating costs eat away at available funds. The School Board has made deep budget cuts of more than $2.6 million to offset the loss of revenue, but at a potential cost to the quality of education. Teaching positions have been eliminated and as a result class sizes have been increased, supervision is reduced and one-on-one instruction between teachers and students has decreased. Additional cuts to courses and reductions in curriculum offerings will decrease overall student achievement and lower our schools’ local report card. We currently have achieved an EFFECTIVE rating meeting 21 of 25 indicators on our report card. This is an increase of four indicators from last year. We should be proud of our improvement! Our schools are operating with a greatly reduced “bare bones” staff as a result of cuts to the administrative staff and non-teaching staff. Further reductions will affect the physical condition of our buildings. Our schools need an infusion of new textbooks and technology to prepare our students for success in the future. OUR COMMUNITY The community of Fairview Park is at a crossroad. We are primed to be the type of community which attracts young, active families. Our affordable housing, safe neighborhoods, pleasant streets and community services are superior to those in other first ring suburb communities. With the addition of the new athletic field, Community-Recreation Center, and the revitalization of Westgate Mall, residents will be able to experience small town atmosphere within a short distance of big city opportunities - the best of both worlds. A new state-of-the-art elementary school will only enhance our school climate and learning environment. If we fail to support our schools, we put the future of our community and its greatest assets - our children - at risk. We need to continue to make Fairview Park “a Great Place to Grow” for our children and their children. OUR FUTURE The future of our schools and inevitably our community is in the hands of our voters. There is a cause and effect to each and every action we take. The ingredients for improvement and success are all present in our community. It is our responsibility to make sure all of the pieces - great schools in a great community - fit together to create the type of future Fairview Park deserves. The Mayor and I are committed to working together to ensure that Fairview Park becomes the kind of place everyone wants to call home by improving our school and community services to residents. Join us in making Fairview Park the very best it can be!
